What to Do After Buying a Used Car

1- Ownership Transfer

To complete the purchase process of a used car, Prime Autos will hand over the title to you with a Bill of Sale. Using this document, you’ll be able to transfer ownership to your name and either use your existing plate or acquire a new one.

2- Get Insurance

Before you get off the lot with your newly purchased used car, you must ensure that you have an insurance plan. The minimum liability insurance will give you the proper coverage for unforeseen incidents. Since insurance coverages vary, it is a good idea to compare different options and include this cost as part of your car maintenance.

3- Secure the Bill of Sale

Your bill of sale will include information about the vehicle and extended warranty. Some insurance providers ask for the bill of sale in order to apply insurance. However, it is advisable to store it along with other important documents.

4- Register Your Car

Alberta rules indicate that a new vehicle purchase comes with a 14-day grace period. During this period, your new used vehicle must be registered. In the meantime, you can drive with your old license plate or a temporary registration tag.

5- Understand Your Vehicle’s Manual

The owner’s manual is helpful if you want to know the ins and outs of your used vehicle. By reading it, you will learn the scheduled maintenance, warranty information, the optimal tire pressure, gas grade and other helpful information about your vehicle.

6- Schedule Repairs

Then, we send vehicles to a certified 3rd party mechanics to ensure that vehicles are mechanically fit. Both mechanics thoroughly check the engine, transmission, exhaust system, fluids and brakes.

7- Schedule Maintenance

Reading the owner’s manual will give you an idea of when the next maintenance should be done. Regular maintenance is vital for keeping used vehicle in tip-top condition and prolonging its life.

Use the manual to create scheduled maintenance and stick to it as closely as possible. This will ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly, helping you save significantly in the long run. For service recommendations, check with your Prime Autos associate.

8- Double-check for Recalls

Manufacturers can issue recalls for both new and used vehicles to upgrade them with the latest technology and address safety or operation issues. We usually handle all recalls, prior to selling vehicles. However, check recalls on your manufacturer’s website to ensure that your vehicle is up-to-date.
